What characteristics make a good Topo team member?
I love learning and, with that, teaching. That sole characteristic has kept me excited about this job--grasping new concepts, processes, and the structure involved in life insurance. On that note, I am realizing my love for teaching. As the company has grown I find myself teaching the ins and outs of case managing. It's fun and I love it! I am also a problem solver and look forward to the challenge provided when a new problem arises. Listening is a skill I am currently perfecting. I am trying to be a good and active listener so that I can hear the true problem in issues that are brought to me. I have found being an active listener allows me to ask the right questions and get to the root of the problem faster. It's sounds like a basic thing (something I should already be doing) but I have found that it is very beneficial.
Describe your role at Topo Financial.
I am a case manager. I review life insurance applications and assist the client and life insurance company in getting to an approval/offer and then ensuring the coverage is in place for the client. I build relationships with clients, agents, life insurance reps and underwriters. In other words, after you tell your agent that you want life insurance, I make sure you get the coverage. Right now we are working on decreasing the amount of time an application takes in our system so that our clients get coverage faster. It's exhilarating and tiring- but it's fun because its something that no other company is focusing on right now.
How does Topo reward hard work?
They reward it with opportunities to grow and be challenged. The managers we have in place now are skilled in noticing talent and matching it with special projects or new tasks. Being a start up there are so many opportunities for leadership and everyday is an opportunity to showcase those abilities and also hone in on them.
What is the most important part of your day at Topo?
I have to say the end of the day. One, because in those last 2 hours right when you feel the drag of the afternoon and the strain of the job set in you have the choice to re-center and focus or bleh. Two, because it is a time to reflect on your progress during the day and plan for tomorrow. I love taking the time to think about what has happened in the day, mentally go over the cases I touched and to kind of check myself. Sometimes I evaluate my performance that day and make notes on what I could have done better. Planning for the next day helps to prepare me for the work ahead and gauge what the next day will look like. I make sure I have time to complete my daily tasks and then make time to complete special projects assigned to me. I feel like I should say the morning but preparation is a big deal for me.
What are the benefits of working for a growing company like Topo Financial?
For me, it's a bunch of things. Working with Geoffery has been amazing. I have the opportunity to learn so many things directly from someone with a ton of experience. Then you throw in all the other managers we have, all of which have had years of professional experience in the business industry. I hope that kind of success is contagious
Another benefit is being able to think up big and outrageous ideas because no idea is a bad idea. I love creativity and innovation and Topo Financial right now is the place to be.
